PARAGLIDING
Up

Paragliding, or "Free-Flying" in Namibia can best be done in the months of March-May or perhaps middle June, as ground temperatures is milder resulting in milder thermals with larger diameter. The paragliding community in Namibia is very small in size, however,  it does exist and is quite active.

The sand dunes of Namibia makes an excellent playground for the free'est form of paragliding. One can play along the sand dunes for hours, drifting in figure 8  maneuvers along the crest of the dunes for sometimes up to 5 kilometers. This can be done on the coastal dunes between Swakopmund and Walvisbay, also inland at the magnificent and much higher sand dunes at Sossusvlei with specific reference to the Elim Dunes (± 110 m) and Dune 45 which is situated 45 km's from Sesriem en-route to Sossusvlei. At the coast Dune 7 (± 75 m) provides excellent flights - this Dune 7 is situated 7 km's east of Walvisbay on the lef thand side of the C14 road.

Cross Country flying inland is by and large an extreme situation, as thermals is strong and small cored. There is only 2 great mountain take-off sites, that of REGENSTEIN and SPREETSHOOGTE. Both these sites is excellent for X-Country flying and provides opportunities for record flying. Other possibilities of launching inland is by winch, from deserted airfields like Karibib to the saltpans of Pokweni and Bitterwasser Farms. Various records has been flown in Namibia, and I am sure the Blue Sky's of Namibia has the potential of World Record Flights, as conditions is by and large the  similar to that of  Kuruman in South Africa.

Namibia is well known to sailplane pilots from all over the world, and many a world record has been set in Namibia. See on the Bitterwasser webpage at http://www.bitterwasser.com/ under http://www.bitterwasser.com/Deutsch/DFliegen/FliegenHaupt.htm
